Percentage = total marks obtained ÷ total maximum marks × 100. Check the maximum marks against your own marksheet; internal-assessment marks are included if they are part of the subject total.

TL;DR: Pick your exam (Karnataka SSLC, II PUC or CBSE Class 10), type each subject's marks and get your percentage instantly, with each subject's percentage. If you have six subjects, the calculator also shows the percentage of your five highest-scoring subjects, because many colleges ask for it.

The formula

Percentage = total marks obtained ÷ total maximum marks × 100

A subject's own percentage works the same way: marks in that subject ÷ its maximum × 100. This matters in SSLC, where the first language is out of 125 and the rest are out of 100: 100 out of 125 is 80%, not 100%.

Worked example: Karnataka SSLC

Subject Marks Out of
First language 100 125
Second language 80 100
Third language 80 100
Mathematics 80 100
Science 80 100
Social science 80 100
Total 500 625

500 ÷ 625 × 100 = 80.00%.

CBSE: who calculates the percentage?

CBSE does not calculate or declare an overall percentage or division. In December 2023 its Controller of Examinations said that if a percentage is needed for admission or a job, the admitting institution or employer may calculate it, and the same institution decides which "best five" subjects to count for a student with more than five (reported by PTI on ThePrint). So use this calculator to know where you stand, and follow the method the college's form asks for.

Tips before you fill a form

  • Copy maximum marks from your marksheet, not from memory. Some subjects have practical or internal parts.
  • Round only at the end. Forms usually want two decimal places.
  • Keep a screenshot of the working: admission offices sometimes ask how you arrived at the figure.

For schools

Schools using EduTechMonitor, the school management software made by Sajre Edutech in Dharwad, enter exam marks once and publish results and report cards to parents in the app, so parents do not have to add up marks themselves.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my percentage from marks?

Add the marks you scored in all subjects, divide by the total maximum marks, and multiply by 100. For example, 500 out of 625 in SSLC is 500 ÷ 625 × 100 = 80%.

What is the total for Karnataka SSLC?

625 in the usual pattern: 125 for the first language and 100 each for the second language, third language, mathematics, science and social science. Check the maximum marks printed on your own marksheet.

Does CBSE give a percentage on the Class 10 marksheet?

No. CBSE has said it does not calculate or declare an overall percentage. If a college or employer needs one, the admitting institution or employer does the calculation, and it also decides which five subjects to count when a student has more than five.

What is the 'best five' percentage?

When a student has six subjects, some institutions count only the five subjects with the highest marks. The calculator shows that figure separately, but the institution you apply to decides whether it uses all subjects or the top five.

Are internal assessment marks included?

Yes, if they are part of the subject total on your marksheet. Enter each subject's total and its maximum as printed.
