How many marks do I need?
You need
180 marks
out of 200 still to come — that is 90.0% in the remaining exams, about 90 marks per exam. You are at 75.0% so far.
This works on raw marks. If your board or college weights exams differently (for example, internal assessment counted separately), enter the marks the way they are added up on your marksheet.
TL;DR: Enter the marks you have scored so far, the maximum for those exams, the maximum still to come and your target percentage. The calculator tells you exactly how many marks you need, what that is as a percentage of the remaining exams, and roughly how much per exam.
The formula
Marks needed = (target % ÷ 100) × total maximum marks − marks already scored
Total maximum marks means the maximum for the exams already written plus the exams still to come.
Worked example
You have scored 300 out of 400 so far (75%). Two exams worth 200 marks in total are left. Your target is 80% overall.
- Total maximum: 400 + 200 = 600
- Marks needed for 80%: 0.80 × 600 = 480
- Still needed: 480 − 300 = 180 marks, which is 90% of the 200 left, about 90 per exam.
Using the answer well
- Check it early. A target that needs 70% in the remaining exams is easy to plan for; one that needs 98% is a warning to act now.
- Pick the subjects with room to grow. The total is what counts, so extra marks where you are weakest often come more easily.
- Combine with attendance. Some boards also need minimum attendance; see the attendance percentage calculator.
To check your current overall percentage, use the marks percentage calculator.
For schools
In EduTechMonitor, the school management software made by Sajre Edutech in Dharwad, teachers enter exam marks and schools publish results and report cards to parents in the app, so families can see progress during the year, not just at the end.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the marks I need to reach a target percentage?
Multiply your target percentage by the total maximum marks of all exams (written and still to come), then subtract the marks you already have. For example, a target of 80% on 600 total marks needs 480; with 300 already scored, you need 180 more.
What does the percentage in the remaining exams mean?
It is the marks you still need divided by the maximum marks still to come. In the example, 180 out of 200 is 90%, so you need to average 90% in the remaining exams.
What if the target is not possible?
If you would need more marks than are still available, the calculator says so and shows the highest overall percentage you can still reach with full marks.
Does it work for internal assessments and unit tests?
Yes, as long as you enter marks the way they are added up on your marksheet. If your school weights some exams more than others, convert them to the marks used in the final total first.
Can I split the marks across several exams?
Enter the number of remaining exams and the calculator shows about how many marks you need in each, assuming equal maximum marks.
