CGPA ⇄ percentage converter
Indicative percentage
85.50%
CGPA × 9.5
A converted percentage is an indicative figure. The institution or employer asking for it decides which formula it accepts; if your marksheet or university prints its own formula, use that.
TL;DR: For CBSE marksheets that show a CGPA, multiply by 9.5 to get the indicative percentage (9.0 CGPA = 85.5%). This rule comes from CBSE's own circular. For a university CGPA, use your university's formula: choose "My university's formula" and enter it.
The CBSE rule and its source
When CBSE introduced grading, it told schools how to read the grades. CBSE Circular No. 24 dated 28 May 2010 says:
- Subject-wise indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 × grade point of the subject
- Overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 × CGPA
So the percentage is "indicative": a fair equivalent, not marks actually scored.
Worked examples
| CGPA | × 9.5 (CBSE) | × 10 (plain) |
|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | 95.0% | 100% |
| 9.0 | 85.5% | 90% |
| 8.2 | 77.9% | 82% |
| 7.0 | 66.5% | 70% |
The two rules give different answers, which is why you should always use the one your board, university or the form asks for.
University CGPA
Universities set their own conversion in their regulations, and some print it on the grade card. Formulas differ: some multiply by 10, others subtract a number from the CGPA first. We do not list university formulas here unless we can point to the university's own document, so choose My university's formula and enter the multiplier and the number to subtract from your regulations.

For schools
Schools using EduTechMonitor, the school management software made by Sajre Edutech in Dharwad, publish exam results and report cards to parents in the app, with each school's own grading set up once.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CBSE CGPA to percentage?
Multiply your CGPA by 9.5. CBSE Circular No. 24 of 28 May 2010 says overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 × CGPA. For example, a CGPA of 9.0 is 85.5%.
Why 9.5 and not 10?
CBSE chose 9.5 for its old grading scheme. It is an indicative figure, not an exact percentage of marks, which is why CBSE calls it the indicative percentage.
How do I convert my university CGPA to percentage?
Use the formula your university publishes in its regulations or prints on the marksheet. Some use CGPA × 10, others subtract a number first and then multiply. Choose My university's formula in the calculator and enter the numbers from your regulations.
Can I convert a percentage back to CGPA?
Yes. Switch to % → CGPA. With the CBSE rule, CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5, so 85.5% gives 9.0.
Which formula should I use on an application form?
The one the form or the institution asks for. If the form does not say, use the formula printed on your marksheet or published by your board or university, and mention it if there is space.
